“We cannot say that water is essential for life: it is life”
Antoine de Saint Exupery

Numerous mineral and thermal springs have a special place among the natural resources of Armenia. There are about 7,500 fresh water and 1300 mineral water sources, many of which are used for balneological purposes and one of which is the famous natural mineral water “Bjni”. “Bjni” Mineral waters plant was founded in 1976. In 1995 it was privatized and in 2010 renamed “RRR” Mineral Waters Plant CJSC. Currently works are underway to improve quality, expand the product range, as well as to improve technical equipment of the company. Works on technological upgrading and reconstruction, acquisition of production facilities, improvement of production conditions, construction of industrial buildings, structures, etc. are continuously held since the start of the company’s operation. Today, the whole process of water production is automated. The plant is equipped with modern facilities. Sanitary hygienic condition of workshops and facilities meet the world standards. Due to modernization of the production and professionalism of the employees mineral water “Bjni” is in demand not only in domestic but also in the international market.

Medicinal properties of “Bjni” are preconditioned with:

1) Chemical properties of total mineralization, ion composition, presence of natural carbonic gas and content of different organic compounds.
2) Physical properties, hydrogen index, temperature and thermal stability.
3) Its biological properties, the presence of antibacterial substances and other microorganisms.

The composition of “Bjni”. Mineral water “Bjni” belongs to the group of hydrocarbonate, sodium, silicon, boric mineral waters. The main indicator of mineral water “Bjni” is the total mineralization, which is the sum of all anions, cations and undissociated molecules and is 4,9-6,5 mg/dm3. Biological and medicinal properties of mineral water “Bjni” are preconditioned with the content of chemical elements, gases and organic compounds. Dissolved mineral salts are presented in the form of ions, cations and anions. The main cations are sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+), and among the anions are chloride (Cl-), sulfate (SO42-) and hydrogen carbonate (HCO3-).

“Bjni” is mixed mineral water, as it contains all of the above mentioned ions. Mixed mineral waters are highly valued, and this is due to the fact that they allow to have complex therapy, while curing several organs. “Bjni” also contains a large number of microelements - iron, arsenic, iodine, bromine, silicon, copper, cobalt, and manganese. Medicinal property of “Bjni” is also due to the existence of these microelements. The composition of “Bjni” is similar to the mineral water “Vichy” (France). “Bjni” complies with all the ecological and health requirements: being naturally carbonated, it is pumped at 37 temperature from the wells with 200 m depth.

“Bjni” does not contain (or their content is below MCL for drinking mineral water) standardized and toxic microelements for drinking mineral water, including heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.), compounds of nitrogen (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium), as well as fluoride, strontium, selenium, and radionuclide. By its organoleptic characteristics the water is clear, colorless, odorless and without precipitation. Sanitary and microbiological status of the water meets the needed requirements. Comparison of previous studies of mineral water “Bjni” over many years with the results of today's tests confirms the stability of its composition and quality.

Mineral water “Bjni” is recommended for the treatment of the following diseases.

• reflux esophagitis;
• chronic gastritis with normal and elevated secretory function of stomach;
• stomach peptic ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
• irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea;
• irritable bowel syndrome with constipation;
• chronic viral hepatitis;
• toxic and drug liver damage;
• fatty liver;
• gallbladder cholesterosis, chronic cholecystitis, cholangitis;
• gall stone disease;
• chronic pancreatitis;
• syndromes of operated stomach after surgery for peptic ulcer disease;
• diabetes mellitus (insulin-dependent and insulin-independent) and impaired glucose tolerance;
• obesity (nutritional);
• violation of lipoprotein metabolism.

Thus, mineral drinking therapeutic table water “Bjni” meets all the requirements of mineral drinking waters, and in addition to the usage in static conditions, is the basis for its industrial bottling.

“Bjni” recreation area. The main therapeutic factors of recreational areas of “Bjni” are: soft favorable climate, rich forest cover and numerous freshwater as well as mineral springs of various physicochemical, microelement and gas composition. The climate is moderately warm, sometimes with moderately hot weather types. It is differentiated with steady progress of weather conditions, moderately cold winter and warm, relatively humid summer. Due to its considerable height and the north east and south west orientation of the surrounding mountain slopes, the recreation area is distinguished with an abundance of solar radiation, the duration of which is 2310 hours per year. Recreation area had considerable precipitation averaging to about 600 mm per year. The highest number of them falls during warm seasons. Favorable climatic conditions and the presence of stable snow cover create real prerequisites for the organization of winter climate treatment. 18 days in a month are suitable for prescription of climate procedures. From late May to mid October there are favorable conditions for climate treatment, as well as short and long term holidays.
